This past weekend marked an exciting milestone for the Lumina Project as we hosted our first organized fundraiser through Hy-Vee's Shop & Share program in Bloomington. Seven of our dedicated members volunteered their time bagging groceries for customers and accepting tips and donations in support of our mission. Community members also had the opportunity to support our organization simply by shopping at Hy-Vee and submitting their receipts to customer service, allowing a percentage of their purchases to be donated directly to LP. In just four hours, through a combination of cash tips, Venmo donations, and receipt-based contributions, we raised an incredible $821.85.
Beyond the financial success of the event, the fundraiser provided us with an invaluable opportunity to engage with hundreds of community members and share the mission behind the Lumina Project. Throughout the afternoon, our volunteers had meaningful conversations with shoppers about the challenges facing individuals experiencing homelessness in our community and the work we are doing to address healthcare disparities through outreach and service. We were met with tremendous support, countless listening ears, and many individuals who expressed interest in our future efforts.
The funds raised through this event will directly support our expanding outreach initiatives within local unhoused encampments and community shelters. As LP continues to grow, we are placing an increasing emphasis on health-related screenings, health education, and connecting vulnerable populations with essential healthcare resources. These donations will help us purchase medical equipment and supplies needed to strengthen those efforts and better serve our community. We are incredibly grateful to Hy-Vee for hosting this event and to every individual who stopped by to support our organization.
